Serebryakov, a pensioned university professor, retires to the countryside with his young, beautiful wife, Elena. The lives of the mansion dwellers change altogether: Vanya, Serebryakov’s brother-in-law, his first wife’s brother, and the doctor Astrov vie for Elena’s favors, while Sonya, the professor’s daughter from the first marriage, and Elena are attracted by Astrov.
Andrei Şerban: “We must accept that the play is more mysterious and richer than any of us, accept the paradox of being human, and accept that the stage offers no solutions, but leaves everything open…”
