Some of the most beautiful love scenes on stage occur in this show, in the simple, wooden setting and in a pool that can only be seen indirectly, through a mirror placed in the background. They have nothing to do with explicit sexuality or nudity, but with common gestures, such as smoking a cigarette unexpectedly lit between the girlfriend’s toes, catching mosquitoes, or wringing out laundry in a couple. The stage director Lev Erenburg, a former physician who took to theater late in life, shared with Lev Dodin the Best Show award of the Golden Mask Festival in 2008 for The Storm mounted at Magnitogorsk, which also won him the first international tours.
