An internationally acknowledged company must hire a person to join its team in a position of high responsibility. The work conditions and salary are very attractive. One by one, four persons enter the room. They have been selected for the interview with a representative of the company. Soon, the interviewing method appears to be very unusual: the time goes on, the candidates are alone, and nobody tells them how the selection is going to take place. Moreover, they realize that they are in a sealed room that they cannot leave. One may assume that somebody outside it is studying their reactions to decide which is the fittest for the job. Meanwhile, the candidates must take a series of tests to show their abilities, the desire to help or sabotage the others, so that the one that lasts to the end may get the job. Thus, their meeting will become a mirror that reflects their generosity, empathy, insensitivity, intolerance. Eventually, nothing is what it seemed to be.
The play by the Catalan playwright (b. 1964), a skilful, rigorous, almost mathematical construction, staged for the first time in Romania by Nottara Theater, is – under its detective-story surface – an exciting incursion into modern man’s psychology, obsessed with efficiency and competence (not to mention competition), yet “undermined” by the same weaknesses as ever.
