Among the many commentaries elicited by The Merchant of Venice over time, the analysis of the Hungarian literary historian, István Géher, is worth citing here: “The central issue is not anti-Semitism or anti-feminism, yet both motifs pervade the play together with many other controversial present-day themes: How should we respond to those who are different from us? Shall we have trust in justice or not? Shall we trust women or not? Where does money come from and what is its use? All these are merged and condensed in a Romantic-matter-of-fact comedy”. This perspective on the text is illustrated by the world built for the show by László Bocsárdi and his team.
A show produced in times of crisis, with a minimum of props and scenery, that exploits in many various ways the acting space.
