It is the visual trip of the famous character (invented by the Czech writer Jaroslav Hašek in the first half of the 20th century) between two worlds – the original book and the 21st century, his odyssey brought about by the bad luck that put him all the time at the crossroads, between two armies and two wars, in a history whose future is as uncertain as its past. The society without form and content from a nebulous, still unborn time creates autocratic structures that lead to violence and murder. The only person that fights against them is the insignificant Švejk, an ordinary, foolishly optimistic soldier, now launched onto the firmament of a future with new forms, but old habits. Švejk emerges unscathed from all his adventures due to his funny stories, but also to his idiot’s mask, a means of passive resistance and poking fun at military authority with disarming – and disarmed – innocence. Back from war, Švejk finds humanness only among animals, near the little bitch Galaxy, the only one capable of listening to him and giving him the gleam of hope we all need to survive, in whatever times we may live.
Constantly striving to renew his means of theatrical expression, the stage director Alexander Hausvater has now borrowed from animation theater, giving almost unlimited freedom to his imagination.
