In our fragile stage direction field, Spring Awakening launches a new promising name. The director devised an intelligent set with a view to creating a specific atmosphere with lyrical accents. In a dried-up wood there lie scattered abandoned objects reminiscent of classrooms in a school, among which an old computer. These objects, “played on” by the stage direction, support the theatrical metaphors that illustrate the world of teenagers disquieted by the maturity that takes them unawares. At the end, when the rude awakening is brought about by the sacrifice of innocent souls, the dried-up trees of the setting seem to blossom in their memory! The great merit of the young stage director lies in accepting to withdraw behind the actors, to be an inspired theatrical “translator of the intentions of the play, which he materializes in ingenious visual images that are always based on the minute guidance of the cast in highlighting the richness of the meanings of words.
