A real mixed bag of esthetic forms and themes, the anthology Israeli Playwrights of Today reflects the rich, complex world of Israel in five emblematic plays by top playwrights: Hanoch Levin, Joshua Sobol, Edna Mazya, Hanna Azoulay-Hasfari and Savyon Liebrecht. Their plays highlight some of the lines of force in the concerns, obsessions, states of affairs of Israel today: the little over 60 years old state of a millennial people; a society of tense, lively debate, always under pressure, a society of amazing mobility where almost nothing is taken for granted. These are plays that let us perceive nuances of a whole world and its fight against its own demons, and the generous, clear-sighted, humanistic, wise personalities of a handful of major writers.
