Radu Afrim’s sympathy for the “old world” the representative of which is Herr Paul, the character in Tankred Dorst’s play, is more than obvious in his vision. The strong visual impact strikes from the first moment, due to the excellent set designed by Iuliana Vilsan (who received UNITER’s Best Set Design award in 2009 for this particular set). The arrangement of the acting space creates a feeling of suffocation, given by a confined place, but as the show unfolds, it becomes friendly, close, and full of surprises for the viewer, like a magic box with dozens of nooks and crannies, access ways and unexpected objects, all with a real potential for humor. A star director especially in the eyes of his generation, Radu Afrim has developed a kind of paralanguage, translating the characters’ lines into a dialect with a powerful colloquial flavor, easily understandable both by the youths who spend most of their time surfing the internet and, generally, by all those who are trying to keep up with the times they’re living in.
