Have You Seen the Moon
documentary film, produced by Willke Film, Cinemateca ArtHoc
A famous Kabuki actor said once: “I can teach you the gesture pattern that indicates ‘looking at the moon’. I can teach you the movement up to the tip of the finger which points to the sky. From the tip of your finger to the moon is your own responsibility.” When he plays, Yoshi Oida says, it doesn’t matter if his gesture is beautiful. To him, the only question is: has the audience seen the moon?
A disciple of the Noh (Kyogen) theater maestro Okura and subsequently a collaborator of Peter Brook for over 30 years, Yoshi Oida is a unique and fascinating example of the union between Oriental theater and Western theater at the highest level of craftsmanship.
Presented by: George Banu
The documetary is preceded by a book launching: The Invisible Actor and An Actor’s Tricks by Yoshi Oida and Lorna Marshall
