The beginnings of Krzysztof Warlikowski in theater are related to two great contemporary stage directors. At the State School of Theater in Krakow, he met Krystian Lupa, who encouraged him to develop his individuality and find his own means of artistic expression. The other one was Peter Brook, who saw Warlikowski’s adaptation of Dostoevsky and invited him to a directing workshop in Vienna. Later, Warlikowski was his assistant in the production of Impressions de Pelléas after Claude Debussy at Bouffes du Nord, Paris (1992).

Since then, Warlikowski has staged plays by Shakespeare (Hamlet, The Tempest, The Taming of the Shrew, Pericles, Macbeth) and ancient dramas, but also plays by Bernard-Marie Koltès (Roberto Zucco and Quay West), Sarah Kane (Cleansed), Tony Kushner (Angels in America), Hanoch Levin (Krum).

The awards won by Warlikowski include: in 2002, Best Foreign Play given by the French Union of Theater Critics for Cleansed; in 2006, Best European Stage Director Meyerhold award in Moscow for Krum; in 2008, Europe Prize – New Theatrical Realities.

“Krzystof Warlikowski's ‘Dybbuk’ is hauntingly powerful.” – Caroline McGinn, Time Out
