I like to make impossible bets with myself. Putting one of the most stirring cult films in the history of cinema, Cries and Whispers, on stage is a risk I took without knowing where it would take me, as I did not know if I could recreate in theater the unique experience of the movie. (…) Bergman used to rehearse with his actresses before the shooting. We are trying to figure out how this project was started, to imagine how the filmed fiction becomes reality, to try to unravel the mystery in the creation of one of the greatest directors by working closely with four exceptional actresses.
Four women form the core of the story: the dying Agnes, her sisters, Karin and Maria, who came to stay with her, and the housemaid Anna. The cries and the whispers in the title come from these women.
