Coca Blues, a golden ban* in the theater’s pocket
He is very young and still has the unadulterated quality to enjoy what he sees, receives and does. Cristian Ban, the director of Coca Blues, is a final-year student at Cluj. As in all good books, he selected his school after his maestro: not that he considers the Babes Bolyai school better than the one in Bucharest, but all he wanted was to be in Mona Chirila’s class, because he considers her a genuine professional. In the process, he discovered that in Cluj the portion of teaching clichés is minimal. “It is a freer school,” he says concisely. At Timisoara he came to work after finding out he matched the requirements of the Pocket program for young creators. The proposal he brought forward was based on an ad-hoc text written by the actor Ioan Peter “Pit” from Arad, and when the theater invited him for the job, from the crowd that showed up at the casting, he selected two actors without realizing they were husband and wife. “They seemed the best suited for the story in Coca Blues both in terms of age and looks; but during the rehearsals I never felt for one moment that they were a couple behind the scenes too, and that this would be an impediment. In Coca Blues, they are two young people who promote rival cola brands and fall in love while arranging the stuff on the shelves. I wanted to see to what extent the Romeo and Juliet story works with the trendy, Xeroxed-like generation fed up with slogans, brands and 18-hours-a-day jobs. I feel very good about the show, because it is about young people of my generation and I feel I am in control, as a stage director, of what I am doing.”

* Ban is the Romanian for “coin” or “money” and the subdivision of the national currency.
