This year, on March 19, it was twenty years since Black March, the bloody ethnic clash between Romanians and Hungarians that marked the recent history of the city of Targu Mures, Transylvania, and Romania at large. For her 20/20 show, the stage directress and playwright Gianina Carbunariu did serious documentation on the conflict, then wrote the text, with the constant involvement of the actors (half of them Romanians, the other half Hungarians). The author of the show has found stories the humanness and authenticity of which can reach the hearts of any audience, be it from Targu Mures or elsewhere, and she tells them in a balanced, relaxed manner, without pathos, but with a lot of humor, while operating in depth, with accuracy. As interethnic conflicts are common in the contemporary world and their escalation a permanent danger, the show has its chance at universality.
