The seventh show directed by Silviu Purcărete at Sibiu is the director’s return to Caragiale’s drama after more than two decades (A Lost Letter, Little Theater, 1988). Faithful to the letter to Caragiale’s text, written in 1885, that brings up the madness of the carnival in a flurry of comical situations set up around love intricacies, the director’s powerful vision lends a rich, popular zest to the comical situations that abound in this impressive staging. Silviu Purcărete looks upon Caragiale’s characters indulgently, even with empathy, bestowing upon them, in a subtle link to the present day, the status of perennial types, in which both the actors that play them and the spectators who are watching can recognize themselves. This is one of the rather few “pure” comedies in the director’s career, as he has more often been acclaimed for his rendition of ancient drama, Shakespearean plays and monumental epic or lyrical works like Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Arabian Nights.
