Following the current trend in Romanian theater, which has generated several shows derived from famous movies, the production of the Sibiu theater impresses first of all by the energy invested by its cast, especially the actress in the leading role, Ofelia Popii, who in 2009 won the Angel Award at the Edinburgh Festival for the role she played in Faust, directed by Silviu Purcarete. The actors were instructed to play at a quick pace, at the speed of a brakeless car running down a slope. As a consequence, the show gives the viewer a feeling of dizziness, of haste towards a denouement which can be anticipated as being tragic. Although the tragedy is confirmed in the finale, it also contains a small dose of happy ending, when Bessy, the simple-minded heroine with a big heart is “crucified” on a cross made of thousands of little lights that looks like a Vegas neon sign.
