Dramatization of a story written by Chekhov in his youth (Live Merchandise), with insertions from other texts by Anton Pavlovich, About Love in Man undoes the simple yet complicated fabric of a ménage à trois, bringing to light the passions, transactions, compromises it sinks into.
Human nature is imperfect, says Chekhov, therefore love cannot be different. Absolute, definitive in appearance, it is after all just currency. The merchandise on sale: a woman. The lover negotiates the price with the husband. The husband knows how to look after his own interests, and love put aside (because he does love his wife!), he sells her – and the woman accepts. In fact, it is the adulterous wife, the suffering lover, the passionate mistress that pulls the strings of this game of negotiation, in her ostensible escape from a fate she bemoans, but from which she is unable to get away. For nothing is new: “The day again looks like all the other days, and the night like all the other nights…” Wherever she goes, whatever she does.
